Vanity Fair’s new editor shuns Hollywood elite for April cover

March 12, 2018 / No Comments

Vanity Fair’s new editor-in-chief, Radhika Jones, just picked her first cover for Vanity Fair — and the star is almost as unknown as she is.

Lena Waithe — an up-and-coming actress and writer best known for her role as Denise in Aziz Ansari’s Netflix series “Master Of None” — is the glossy’s April cover star, The Post has learned.

Annie Leibovitz is said to have photographed Waithe, who is African-American and openly gay, at her home in Los Angeles with her girlfriend, Alana Mayo.

“We don’t comment on future covers,” a Vanity Fair spokeswoman said.

Sources said the surprise pick is a signal that Jones — whose predecessor Graydon Carter raised the magazine’s profile in the 1990s with a focus on the “New Establishment” in business and entertainment — aims to refocus Vanity Fair yet again.

“Waithe and Mayo are part of a new wave of talent that is taking over Hollywood,” a source with knowledge of the shoot said. “This is the future.”

Waithe penned a “Master Of None” episode based on her own coming out, which drew critical acclaim and earned her a 2017 Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.

More recently, she created “The Chi,” a new series on Showtime. Meanwhile, her partner, Mayo, recently was tapped by actor Michael B. Jordan to be the head of production and development for his Outlier Society Productions.

A source said Leibovitz took multiple shots of the power couple for the cover story, which was completed last week in LA. The cover, however, is said to be a stand-alone of Waithe.

Still, seeing Waithe on the cover might be jarring for Vanity Fair readers, who are used to seeing megawatt faces from Hollywood. Carter’s final cover for March, on newsstands now, is Jennifer Lawrence.

Waithe’s only other cover, meanwhile, was last year for the niche LGBTQ glossy Out.

In her first letter to readers, Jones said she sees a “ tremendous opportunity: to draw attention to the people who are on the culture’s cutting edge, whose talent and creative vision transform the ways we see the world and ourselves.”
